The UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY) recently donated 550 books to the Big Heart Library in the Emirati-Jordanian as part of its Kan Yama Kan (KYK) book distribution drive. The books were donated by individuals and organisations across the UAE. The Big Heart Library was established by Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, International Publishers Association (IPA) President, Founder and Honorary President of UAEBBY.
It caters for refugee and displaced children and young adults residing in the camp, looks after their educational needs and helps them cope with their unfortunate circumstances. During the visit, the UAEBBY delegation met the managers of the Big Heart Library. The two sides discussed cooperation and future projects including organising workshops to achieve the library's goal to create a nurturing environment for the children and to raise an informed young generation that can become active contributors to their communities.
Marwa Al Aqroubi, President of the UAEBBY, commented: "Knowledge is a key element that spurs development in society in general, and refugee communities in particular. It ensures a healthy environment which encourages refugee children to exercise their rights to acquire knowledge.
Through the Kan Yama Kan initiative, UAEBBY continues to enhance its status as one of the top contributors of books to refugee communities to help them overcome challenges through reading and accessing various sources of knowledge." She said: "UAEBBY seeks to provide the most important knowledge tools, making them available to children who have been forced to leave their homeland due to adverse conditions and relocated to refugee camps, in cooperation with entities that help them.
The Big Heart Library is one of the most prominent initiatives that shares our goals to extend a helping hand to provide children with a library that contains the best sources of knowledge to help expand and enrich their knowledge." She added that despite the prevailing pandemic, UAEBBY was keen on conducting field visits to forge partnerships that support children and adolescents and help them forge a brighter future through quality initiatives that provide them with the right tools and knowledge sources.
