The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced two Asians to six months in jail to be followed by deportation and fined them Dhs25,000 on charges of attempting to swindle Dhs400,000 from an investor after impersonating policemen, inserting a drug-like substance into the investor’s vehicle and convincing the investor of his involvement in a drug trafficking case.
The Court of Appeal ordered the sentence to be suspended but upheld the fine and deportation.
The case dates back to May last year when an investor filed a complaint with Dubai Police that he was threatened with imprisonment by two people who claimed to be criminal investigation agents, who were assigned to keep an eye on him for violating the precautionary measures.
The victim stated in the investigations that the two men asked him to stop while he was driving his vehicle and showed him a military ID. The defendants asked the victim to search his vehicle and he agreed, he said, adding that while one of them was talking with him, the other defendant took out a palm-sized substance wrapped in tin, which he alleged to be drugs. The defendants told the victim that he might face a 35-year jail term.
The victim added that one of the defendants told him that he was a captain and the commander of the operation and that he could help him avoid the jail term against Dhs400,000.
The victim yielded to the defendants’ pressure and agreed immediately to their request. He handed Dhs25,000 over to them and agreed with them to give them the remaining amount as soon as possible. He, however, doubted them and filed a complaint with the police, who set a trap for them in co-operation with the victim.
A policeman stated in the investigations that it was agreed with the victim to hand another sum of money over to the defendants after the latter called the victim and asked him to give the remaining amount in order to close the file.
The victim set a date to hand $7,000 over to the defendants in a café. The defendants came wearing local clothes to the place but were caught red-handed while receiving the amount agreed on.
An earlier report said an Asian premeditatedly killed his fellow friend after he had discovered that he communicated with his sister on her phone and asked her to have an affair with him.
The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced the killer to life imprisonment to be followed by deportation. The verdict was upheld by the Court of Appeal.
The case dates back to February last year when the police received a report of a murder in a sandy area in Jebel Ali.
