Three Asians jailed for assault, robbery

The Dubai Court of Appeal upheld a ruling issued by the Court of First Instance sentencing a gang of three Asians to three years in jail to be followed by deportation on charges of assaulting a fellow man to force him to sign a cheque for Dhs320,000.

The case dated back to October last year when a building guard in the International City, China Town, filed a complaint in which he stated that he saw a group of Asians forcing a blindfolded man to get into an apartment in the building.

A policeman stated in the investigations that a team of detectives rushed to the scene where they found three people detaining another and consequently took them all to the police station.

On interrogation, the victim stated that he received a phone call from an Asian woman requesting him to deliver stuff to someone in her home country. When he arrived in the building, the woman asked him to come to her apartment and as soon as he entered, a man hit him with a wooden stick on the head, while another shocked him with a stun gun.

The victim added that three people took him in their vehicle to a desert area and asked him to sign a bank cheque or hand Dhs120,000 over to them; otherwise they would kill him. He had to sign the cheque and later he was taken again to an apartment in the International City, where they were arrested.

Recently, the Dubai Criminal Court sentenced four people of different nationalities to one year in jail to be followed by deportation and fined them Dhs3,000 and 2,000 rupees.

The defendants kidnapped and assaulted an Asian for refusing to pay a debt of Dhs5,000 back to one of them. They also robbed the victim by coercion, photographed him nude and threatening to post his photos on Internet if he reported the incident to the police.
