The Criminal Court in Dubai sentenced an Asian driver to six months in prison for embezzling Dhs60,000 from his workplace, and lost what he embezzled in gambling. The Court also ordered the convict to repay double the amount he embezzled and fined him Dhs5,000 for the second charge. He would be also deported after serving the terms, the Court ruled.
The case dates back to last December, when an employee at one of the government institutions filed a report stating that a driver failed to deliver an amount, which she gave to him to hand over to an accountant in a government hospital.
She said that she had given the driver two envelopes containing Dhs60,000 to deliver to the accountant of a hospital affiliating with the institution to pay salaries of two staff doctors, but the accountant confirmed that the driver delivered him nothing.
She tried to contact the driver, but he did not answer her calls. She called the police and reported the incident.
The driver was arrested and he admitted that he had received Dhs60,000 from the employee and went to his residence, where a number of Asian persons offered him to gamble in one of the workers’ residences. He agreed and gambled on the amount he was supposed to deliver to the hospital and lost it fully.
