The Sharjah Police arrested an Arab involved in a hit-and-run accident on Monday morning within 45 minutes from receiving a report to this effect.
Earlier, a report was received by Sharjah Police’s operations room at 11:44am on Monday that an Asian sustained multiple injuries after being run over by a car on Al Wahda Street. The victim was taken to the hospital while the driver fled from the scene.
The competent authorities at Sharjah Police kept a sharp lookout for the driver. Within 45 minutes, they identified and arrested him and seized his car.
The accused, who was surprised by how the police could reach him over a short period of time, confessed to his crime, pleading that he did not stop because he was confused and scared and thought that the victim sustained minor injuries. Al Buhairah Comprehensive Police Station took its measures to refer the case to the Public Prosecution.
The police explained that escaping from the scene of an accident is a crime punishable by law and drivers involved in such accidents are actually charged with two crimes. They called on drivers to assume social responsibility by reporting the accident to the police and try to help the victims, as this might contribute to saving their lives. They also called on drivers to abide by the speed limit and stick to their lane in a bid to avoid accidents.
The police called on the public to be cautious while crossing streets and use zebra crossings for this purpose, stressing that they will not be lenient in applying the law to offenders of traffic regulations.
