The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced a Gulf citizen to three months in jail on charges of laying hold on a vehicle that belonged to his wife after forging the latter’s signature on a registration certificate issued by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The case dated back to January last year when a Gulf woman discovered that a Hummer H2 was sold to her husband without her knowledge. The complainant stated in the investigations that she was surprised that she did not own a vehicle that belonged to her, adding that she discovered so after communicating with the RTA to check the total fines on the vehicles registered in her name.
The complainant said she left her husband’s house over a dispute with him in 2020 without taking her vehicle but was later surprised that the vehicle was sold without her knowledge.
Consequently, she filed a complaint with the authority concerned, which initiated an investigation with the employee in charge.
It was found later that the complainant’s husband submitted an application to the RTA in which he requested the vehicle to be registered in his name after submitting the complainant’s passport and original ID card and forging her signature under the buyer’s box. On interrogation, the suspect denied that he laid hold on the vehicle, pleading that he was the actual owner of the vehicle and had bought it under vouchers with his own money before he registered it in his wife’s name.
He confessed that he signed a vehicle ownership certificate in the seller’s box on behalf of his wife, and so did he in the buyer’s box.
