In a tragic incident, a groom killed his friend by mistake during a celebratory firing in India, turning the wedding venue into a crime scene.
The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh.
The police said a person was killed in celebratory firing.
A video of the incident shared on social media showed the groom Manish Madheshia on a chariot during his wedding procession.
Several people can be seen standing around him as he prepares to discharge a weapon in the air.
The groom shot several rounds but somehow discharged it towards his friend Babu Lal Yadav, a soldier in the Indian Army.
The local authorities said that the gun used by the groom belonged to Yadav.
The horrific incident occurred in the Brahmnagar area of Sonbhadra district.
Sonbhadra Police said, “Sonbhadra Superintendent of Police Amrendra Pratap Singh confirmed that the groom and the victim were friends. Immediately after the firing, Yadav was rushed to the hospital but died during treatment, said Mr Singh.”
The victim's family has registered an FIR and the groom has been arrested, he said. The gun used for the firing has also been seized.
The police also said, “The marriage program was organized in Ashirwad Vatika under the police station Robertsganj area…”
Local media further reported that those who brought Yadav to the hospital fled of fear of being detained by the police in relation to the case.
Doctors said Yadav was brought unconscious to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The authorities said that any kind of celebratory firing at gatherings, weddings and shrines is a criminal offence in India.
The police said firing from licensed guns at any events is punishable by law.
