Heavy rain hit several areas in the Sultanate of Oman on Monday, causing an unprecedented run-off of wadis. The floods submerged a number of districts, triggering landslides.
The incessant rainfall paralysed traffic on several roads, according to local media.
The Omani Meteorological Department said that parts of the mountainous areas in the governorates of Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, Al Dakhiliyah, North and South Batinah witnessed rain of varying intensity that led to flooded valleys.
The rain, according to a video published by the Royal Oman Police, through its Twitter account, cut off traffic on the road linking the Wilayat of Nakhl and Al Awabi.
This was due to the collapse of part of the road adjacent to the valley course in the Falaj Bani Khuzair area.
The police called on travellers to be careful, as traffic was closed to light vehicles in the Al Turath neighbourhood — Al Rahba road in the Wilayat of Nizwa due to a landslide.
The police announced the arrest of a person for risking his life while trying to cross a valley in the Wilayat of Al-Hamra. He was rescued by teams of the Civil Defence after his vehicle stopped in the middle of the valley.
Legal procedures against him are being taken.
The police also announced the rescue of two people who were stuck inside their vehicle, after it drifted into the Wadi Al-Bowerda stream in the Wilayat of Yanqul in the Dhahirah Governorate, and evacuated them to a safe place.
