An Asian and others, who are still at large, broke into a villa inhabited by a woman and stole three mobile phones from her under duress.
She, however, screamed for help and her neighbours came to her rescue, arrested one of the suspects and handed him over to the police. The court sentenced him to three months in jail to be followed by deportation.
The case datyed back to last March when an Asian woman filed a complaint in which she stated that she had been robbed under duress by five people. According to her statement, she was surprised by five people breaking into her villa in the early morning hours. The prime suspect assaulted her while the others stole her mobile phones, she added.
As she screamed for help, the neighbours rushed to the villa to help her, she added, noting that as soon as they arrived, they caught one of the suspects and handed him over to the police while the other four managed to run away.
A policeman stated that he saw a group of people in front of the victim’s villa situated in Abu Hail area. He inquired from them about why they were there and they told him that they were guarding a thief who entered the villa of one of their neighbours, where he assaulted a woman and stole her three phones.
On interrogation, the suspect alleged that he worked as a secret agent for the General Department of Anti-narcotics and that he was there because the inhabitants of the villa were drug dealers.
Investigations, however, proved that what he said was not true and the Dubai Public Prosecution charged him with theft under duress. The court convicted him and issued its above verdict, which was upheld by the court of Appeal.
