Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Monday it had arrested a Japanese consul in Vladivostok, the Russian Pacific port, on charges of spying, declaring him a "persona non grata," Russian news agencies reported.
The diplomat has been identified as Motoki Tatsunori.
The FSB said it had arrested the Japanese consul in the act of obtaining classified information about the impact of Western sanctions on the economic situation in Russia's Far East.
The FSB said he was caught "red-handed" receiving secret information.
The Russian Foreign Ministry ordered the diplomat to leave the country within 48 hours.
The FSB also raised the issue with Tokyo through diplomatic channels and declared the diplomat Motoki Tatsunori, persona non grata, local media reported.
