Four jailed and fined on assault and theft charges

A gang of four Asians including a Gulf citizen managed to lure an Asian and stole a kilo of gold after impersonating detectives. The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced three of them in presence and another in absentia to one year in jail to be followed by deportation, fined them Dhs215,000 and ordered that a vehicle that the gang members used in their crime be impounded.

The Court of Appeal upheld the verdict. The case dated back to last February when an Asian filed a complaint in which he stated that he had been robbed under duress by a gang of four people including a Gulf citizen.

According to victim’s statement, he owned a gold bar of an estimated weight of one kilogram and he was looking for a technician to convert it into jewels that he could offer for sale.

The victim added that he received a phone call from one of the gang members who told him that he was a technician and interested in converting his gold bar into jewels. They agreed to meet near a store for selling jewels in Al Karama.

According to the official documents, the victim arrived on time at the agreed place where he met the suspect but no sooner he offered him the gold bar, he was surprised by three people who claimed to be policemen.

They told him that he was under arrest as he was trying to promote fake gold. When they tried to take his gold, the victim tried to resist them but they assaulted him and stole his gold bar before they fled away in their vehicle. He then reported the incident to the police.

A policeman stated that a team of detectives gathered inferences and managed to identify the owner of the vehicle used in the incident and the others. Later, the Gulf citizen and two Asians were arrested with the gold bar in their possession.

They all confessed to having lured the Asian and planned to rob him in participation with another man who is still at large and who told them about the victim’s kilogram of gold.
