The Dubai Misdemeanor Court sentenced an Asian driver in absentia to one year in jail to be followed by deportation and fined him Dhs80,000 for misusing his job to steal a truck that belonged to a general contracting company he was working for and selling its cargo. The court also sentenced another man in presence to one month in jail to be followed by deportation and fined him jointly with the other defendant Dhs1.5 million.
The case dated to last August when an agent of a public transport company filed a complaint in which he stated that a truck and its cargo estimated at Dhs1.5 million had been stolen. The complainant stated that the company manager informed him that communication was lost with the truck driver who had a shipment to deliver in Sharjah.
The cargo, which included copper cables belonging to a general contracting company, was handed over to the driver for delivery to a site as per a contract concluded with a transport company, but the driver stole the truck and the cargo, he added. According to the official documents, a team of detectives managed to locate the truck and the stolen cables and arrested the second suspect.
On interrogation, the suspect confessed to having bought the truck and its cargo from unknown people who had acquired the same from the truck driver. He also admitted that he knew that the truck and the cargo had been stolen.
