For the sixth year in a row, the University of Sharjah (UOS) has maintained the first place at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) level in the 2022 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, which ranks and evaluates universities around the world in sustainable development field and adherence to the standards of clean environment. This year, the UoS ranked among the top 100 world universities in sustainability field, second at the level of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, third at the Arab world level, and fifth at the level of the Middle East countries.
Commenting on this achievement, Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the UoS, congratulated Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the UOS, on this achievement, pointing out that with the support and care of His Highness, the UOS maintained the first place among local universities for the sixth year in a row, as well as joined the top 100 world universities according to the results of UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, as it advanced to jump 38 places globally compared to last year results, ranking 81 globally, as well as advanced in the same classification at the regional levels, as the University ranked second at the level of GCC countries, third at the level of the Arab world, and fifth at the level of the Middle East countries.
The chancellor indicated that 1,050 universities from various countries have participated in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking of 2022, including the UOS which has made remarkable progress in a number of criteria on which the classification is based, as it advanced to rank the seventh internationally in the Setting and Infrastructure (SI) category, 22 globally on efficient management of water, 73rd globally in the category of recycling and waste management, achieving all measurement indicators by 100%, and 85 globally in Education and Research category in the sustainability field.
Al Naimiy stressed that the UOS’s continuous progress in sustainability field is a reflection of the University’s vision and mission in the field of sustainable development, adherence to clean environment standards, reducing air pollution and harmful emissions in the environment by reducing energy consumption, computing educational and administrative processes to reduce paper consumption.
Therefore, the University works through the Sustainability Office and its departments on raising awareness among students on sustainability and ways to address environmental issues that have severe impact on people, by encouraging them to conduct applied scientific research in this field to find solutions to environmental problems currently facing the world, and hold educational activities and events inside and outside the University about the importance of sustainability concept and its integration into all aspects of human life to achieve the environmental balance in various areas of life.
Recently, His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and Founder of the University of Sharjah (UoS), attended, in the presence of Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the UoS, the University's celebrations of its silver jubilee in front of the main campus. Sheikh Sultan received a certificate of "distinguished professor” in literature, humanities and social sciences from Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, President of the University of Sharjah, in appreciation of His Highness’s important academic, cultural, literary and historical contribution and his role in supporting all works that enhance and expand the university’s horizons and goals locally, regionally and globally.
On this occasion, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah delivered a comprehensive speech in which he addressed the University of Sharjah and its higher goals within the strategy His Highness has set for the development of Man and the advancement of science, pointing to the outstanding contribution of the university in various developmental areas in the Emirate, and its advancement and great development.
