Emirati astronaut Sultan al-Neyadi will embark on a historic journey for the entire Arab world, paving the way for next generations to be inspired by the his space feat.
Sultan al-Neyadi, alng with Nasa's Stephen Bowen and Warren Hoburg and Russia's Andrey Fedyaev are scheduled to fly to the ISS on Feb.27 as members of SpaceX Dragon Crew-6.
The live coverage will begin from 7:15am (UAE time) while the liftoff will be at 10:45am.
The 41-year-old Emirati will become the first Arab astronaut to spend six months in space when he blasts off for the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
Sultan Al Neyadi said, "Today we fly to pave the way for the next generations.”
On Sunday, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan made a phone call to Sultan Al Neyadi.
During the phone call, the UAE President asked Al Neyadi about his wellbeing, family, and mission?
Al Neyadi replied, “They are all doing well, Your Highness. Everything is good.
"We arrived at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida two days ago, and our parents also arrived.
"It was a good gathering for all of us. Everyone is excited and waiting for this historic moment, Your Highness."
Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed said, "May God protect you wherever you may be, and may you return to us safe and sound, dear and cherished, raising the flag of your country. We are looking forward to your return, God willing."
Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, said he is proud of all those who work diligently enhance the UAE’s reputation.
He tweeted: “Inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed’s vision, Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi is set to embark on a 6-month mission to the International Space Station. We are proud of Sultan, MBRSC and everyone who aspires to achieve the best for the UAE.”
Sheikh Maktoum Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, said on Twitter, “A new dream comes true for the UAE, led by the @MBRSpaceCentre. Our @Astro_Alneyadi embarks on the longest mission for an Arab astronaut to the International Space Station. With him our ambitions & our late father, Zayed’s dream, to build the future of humanity grows.
Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology said, “Best of luck to @Astro_Alneyadi and the Crew-6 team as they embark on their journey to the @Space_Station. We are proud of your hard work and dedication, and eagerly await your safe return home. You have shown that with perseverance and a strong spirit, nothing is impossible!
