A strong earthquake lasting for at least 30 seconds was felt across much of Pakistan Tuesday night, witnesses said.
The US Geological Survey said the center of the magnitude 6.5 quake was located 40 kilometers south-southeast of Jurm, Afghanistan in Afghanistan's Hindukush region.
The tremor had a depth of 194 km and its epicentre was in the Hindu Kush mountain range, near the remote northern Afghan province of Badakhshan.
"People ran out of their houses and were reciting the Quran," an AFP correspondent in Rawalpindi said, with similar reports coming from the capital Islamabad, Lahore and elsewhere in the country.
Residents in the capital Tuesday fled their homes as walls started swaying and the quake was felt across the country.
Earlier, Pakistan's meteorological office said the earthquake was a magnitude 7.7.
There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.
The tremors were felt in Northern India.
Delhi residents ran out of their homes.
Photojournalist Umar Ganie, a resident of Srinagar, shared video of residents running out of their homes.
Ganie wrote, “People save themselves in Srinagar during the massive earthquake which rocks the Kashmir valley, including Srinagar.”
