The Sharjah Police arrested 119 beggars, including 109 males and 10 females, within the campaign launched by the Media and Public Relations Department, in cooperation with the Anti-Beggary Committee, at the beginning of the Holy month of Ramadan.
The police stated that the total amounts of money found with the seized beggars since the beginning of the Holy month exceeded Dhs33,000.
The police called on community members wishing to donate their alms money to deal with state-accredited charitable associations and institutions, in order to ensure that it reaches those who deserve it among the poor and needy.
Sharjah Police had launched the "Begging is a crime and giving is a responsibility" campaign with the aim of educating community members about the methods used by beggars to beg and collect money, pointing out that this phenomenon is linked to behaviours and risks which threaten the security of individuals, such as theft, and exploitation of children and patients, in order to achieve financial gain.
