The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced four Asians in presence and two others in absentia to three years in jail to be followed by deportation on theft charges. The verdict was upheld by the Court of Appeal.
The defendants stole Dhs1.48 million from an employee when they blocked his way after he had left a money exchange company in Naif area.
Four of the defendants were arrested and confessed to having collaborated with two others, who are still at large, in forming a gang to watch customers of money exchange offices and rob them.
The case dates back to September last year when an Asian employee working for a jewellery store based in Naif area filed a complaint in which he stated that he had been robbed by six Asians.
The complainant stated that the owner of the store assigned him to exchange SR1.55 million from a money exchange company near his workplace.
He put the money in a bag and went to the company on foot but on his way back, a gang of six Asians blocked his way, assaulted him and stole the Dhs1.48 million that was in his possession.
According to the official documents, a policeman stated in the interrogations that a team of detectives gathered inferences and checked the surveillance cameras before managing to identify the suspects.
The team arrested four of the defendants who all confessed to having collaborated with two others in forming a gang to watch customers of money exchange company in Naif area.
They also admitted that the money seized in their possession of over Dhs70,000 was part of their share in the robbery and that the remaining amount was kept with the two other suspects who are still at large.
