The Dubai Misdemeanor Court fined a driver and a foreman Dhs5,000 for causing the death of a co-worker while moving down an electric generator in a general trading establishment in Al Ruwayyah area in Dubai.
The case dates back to last January when a team from Dubai Corporation of Ambulance Services and a police patrol moved to the place indicated in a report stating that a worker sustained serious injuries in his worksite.
According to the employee who made the report, he heard a loud crash on the ground and a worker’s call for help, adding that he saw the victim in a pool of blood after falling from the top of a truck on the ground.
He called an ambulance and informed the police accordingly.
The victim was taken to the hospital where it was found that the serious injuries he had sustained in the head led to his death.
On interrogation, the truck driver stated that he moved the truck without making sure that the victim had followed the safety measures and consequently the worker fell down.
Meanwhile, the foreman stated that he was not in the worksite when the accident occurred and that the victim did not follow the safety measures while moving down an electric generator inside the establishment.
As a result, the victim fell on his head from top of an electric generator that was on the truck, he added.
The forensic lab report showed that the accident was the result of dangerous and unsafe practices as represented by the worker holding the lifting ropes and swinging to get down on the ground, which caused him to fall down.
Other causes included the workers’ lack of adequate training in safe work procedures, the risks arising from the nature of their loading and unloading work and the absence of sufficient supervision on the part of the establishment staff to ensure their abidance by the rules of safe work.
