The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced an Asian cleaner to three months in jail to be followed by deportation and fined him Dhs990 for stealing a Bluetooth headset and an electronic storage unit containing a digital currency worth $5,000 from a customer of a restaurant he worked for in the Jumeirah area.
The verdict was upheld by the Court of Appeal.
The case dated back to last February when an Arab young man reported to the police that his belongings had been stolen while he was in a restaurant in the Jumeirah area. The victim stated that he arrived at the place for dinner and as soon as he finished, he went to the water closet to wash and left his belongings on the table.
As soon as he returned, he discovered that his Bluetooth headset and electronic storage unit had disappeared, he said.
He informed the restaurant management accordingly and when they checked the surveillance cameras, they found the defendant stealing the victim’s belongings from his table. Consequently, they informed the police of what happened.
A policeman stated in the interrogations that the defendant was arrested with the victim’s Bluetooth headset in his possession. The defendant alleged that he had found the Bluetooth headset while he was working and did not advise the restaurant manager because he wanted to keep it for his personal use. The defendant, however, denied stealing the electronic storage unit.
