Junaid Safdar, the son of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz, said on Thursday that he and his wife, Ayesha Saif, had parted ways, over two years after their marriage.
Junaid Safdar is also the grandson of Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
In his Instagram story, Junaid wrote, "News about my divorce is true." He also requested the media to respect their privacy.
This is an entirely private matter and I request the media to respect our privacy," the politician's son said in the story.
"I hope with this decision we find our peace In Shaa Allah. I will speak no further on this matter." "I wish her well," Junaid added.
Soon after the announcement, Junaid removed all his pictures with his former wife on Instagram.
The duo stayed away from the media spotlight during their time together.
The wedding ceremony of the couple took place on August 22, spanning across two locations in London and Pakistan. This decision was influenced by the presence of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, who is currently residing in self-exile in London.
Ayesha Saif Khan is the daughter of Saif-ur Rehman, former chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) during former PM Nawaz Sharif's second tenure.
The nikkah ceremony took place in the Lanesborough, an extravagant hotel on the Hyde Park Corner in Knightsbridge. The event was attended by Junaid Safdar's grandfather, his uncle Hussain Nawaz, party member and former finance minister Ishaq Dar, and other top dignitaries.
The groom's parents, Maryam Nawaz and Muhammad Safdar, were unable to attend the wedding ceremony owing to their names currently on the Exit Control List. Maryam Nawaz had announced her future absence through a tweet earlier this month.
However, they were present during the ceremony via video call with their son. Maryam Nawaz also posted pictures of the ceremony on her Twitter and blessed the couple.
