The Dubai Court of First Instance issued a verdict obligating a Gulf citizen to pay Dhs150,000 to his wife for beating her and damaging her vehicle.
The defendant, however, appealed against the verdict and consequently the Court of Appeal reduced the compensation to Dhs40,000 plus a five per cent interest from the date the verdict was issued until full payment of the amount.
The plaintiff, an Asian woman, filed a lawsuit before the Court of First Instance in which she demanded that her husband be obligated to pay her Dhs250,000 as a compensation for the physical and moral damage that had befallen her plus a nine per cent interest from the date of the judicial claim until full payment of the amount.
She stated that she had been married to the defendant since 2016 and had two children with him, adding that in 2021, disputes arose between them as the defendant caused her injuries by beating her and damaged her vehicle.
The plaintiff added that after her husband had beaten her, she went to the hospital where the medical report confirmed that she had bruises in various parts of her body that prevented her from performing her domestic work for no less than 20 days.
A police report also showed that the defendant intentionally damaged the plaintiff’s vehicle, for which the Court of Misdemeanors fined him Dhs10,000.
Legal adviser Dr Alaa Nasr stated that the Court of First Instance ruled that the defendant be obligated to pay his wife Dhs150,000 plus a five per cent interest from the date the ruling was issued.
As he was not satisfied with the verdict, the defendant appealed against it with the Court of Appeal, which reduced the compensation to Dhs40,000.
