A state of outrage sparked in Kuwait after a video of a man and a woman slapping and assaulting a cop in the street in Al Jabriya area went viral on social media networks on Monday.
According to the Kuwaiti “Al Majlis” newspaper, which published the details of the incident of assault on the policeman, a 21-year-old Kuwaiti man, who was driving his sports car recklessly, had been stopped by a cop on the road and asked to get into the patrol car.
“Al Majlis” reported that the man's parents came in the meantime in their car and objected to the arrest of their son, so the cop had to request support from other patrols. Then, the man and his mother assaulted the policeman, before he was controlled by the cops and pushed into the patrol car, which headed directly to Al Jabriya Police Station, Al Majlis added.
That man is now facing a number of cases, including insulting an employee on the public road, beating him, insulting and slandering, and several traffic violations, Al Majlis added
The video sparked outrage in Kuwait, as one commented: “It is totally unacceptable to assault police and security personnel and the penalty should be toughed. The policemen represent the State and assaulting them means assaulting the State. The prestige of the law must be imposed.”
Another said: “The law must be applied to this assault on security personnel. Such obstinacy followed by some young people with the security men must be deterred, either through deterrent penalties or defamation on television in order to be an example to others.”
