Sharjah adopts first-of-its-kind technology to detect water leaks via satellite in UAE

The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) has unveiled its adoption of the first technology to detect water leaks via satellite in the UAE.

This sophisticated technology has contributed to saving 788 million gallons in 2023, SEWA said.

Engineer Faisal Al Serkal, Director of the Water Department, explained that satellite leak detection technology was used to survey the 5,000 km water network. It was able to locate the invisible spots of leaks from pipes in the distribution lines.

He pointed out that during 2023, the project team was able to detect and treat 542 leaks in the distribution lines of various sizes. This contributed to saving 788 million gallons, which is equivalent to an amount of Dhs27 million, Eng. Al Serkal added.

He also stressed that SEWA tirelessly works to monitor and maintain water networks in accordance with the best international standards and aims to further save and minimize losses in water networks in order to preserve water.
