The American University of Sharjah (AUS) College of Engineering (CEN) concluded on Thursday, July 18, a four-week laboratory-intensive Geographic Information Systems (GIS) training programme for 15 engineers from the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA). The training is part of the college’s Executive Education Program.
“GIS is an efficient mapping platform for utility infrastructure, whether it is for water, gas or electricity. More importantly, GIS provides real-time spatial analytics, which are necessary for the operations and decision-making at utility companies from the field to the office,” said Dr. Tarig Ali, Professor of Civil Engineering and program coordinator.
He further emphasised: “This training programme highlights our commitment to providing industry professionals with the advanced tools and knowledge needed to excel in their fields. By equipping SEWA engineers with these critical GIS skills, we are not only enhancing their capabilities but also contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of utility management in Sharjah.”
The training programme engaged participants in six hours of daily learning, gaining hands-on experience with Environmental Systems Research Institute's (ESRI) Arc Geographic Information System (ArcGIS) Pro software. The training covered various applications, including spatial analysis, network analysis modeling, field inspection and data collection, and asset management.
Each instructor-led session integrated practical exercises, assignments, quizzes, group discussions, case studies and problem-solving scenarios. Trainees worked on real-world examples and projects directly related to SEWA’s infrastructure, ensuring the relevance and applicability of their new skills.
“Our goal at AUS is to foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation. This GIS training programme exemplifies our dedication to bridging the gap between academia and industry by utilising our expert faculty to provide practical, hands-on experience, in our state-of-the-art labs. This directly impacts the operational excellence of organisations like SEWA. Our Executive Education programme provides industry professionals with specialised training and skills to excel in their fields through innovative and practical learning experiences,” said Dr. Fadi Aloul, Dean of CEN.
Commenting on the value of the training programme, Majid AlMutawa, Human Potential Director at SEWA, stated: “Investing in our engineers' professional development is a top priority for SEWA. This programme not only enhances their technical skills but also fosters a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within our organisation. The hands-on experience and practical knowledge gained through this training are invaluable assets that will drive our operational success and efficiency."
The CEN Executive Education programme offers a comprehensive array of specialised courses and workshops, equipping industry leaders with advanced skills and strategic insights.
