In the context of the joint collaboration between the Department of Economic Development (DED) in Ras Al Khaimah and the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) to address illicit business practices and safeguard consumers and community members from harmful products and substances, the two entities conducted a series of joint monitoring campaigns. These campaigns led to the detection of unlicensed tobacco products on several farms in the southern regions of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
A total of 7,195kg of tax-evaded tobacco and dukkha, with an estimated market value of Dhs12 million, were seized, as detailed in the official report. As a result of confessions made by Asian workers employed on the aforementioned farms, it has been established that they have been engaged in illicit trade activities for a period of several months, operating without the requisite licences from the relevant government authorities.
Following an investigation, it was determined that the individuals in question had combined expired tobacco products with various colors and dyes, in contravention of the Consumer Protection Law, which prohibits the distribution of tobacco in any form or under any name. Consequently, the requisite legal measures were initiated against the perpetrators, while the Federal Tax Authority has confiscated all illicit materials. Additionally, all individuals involved were referred to the relevant judicial authorities for further proceedings. Furthermore, the Department of Economic Development imposed a fine on the individuals for engaging in commercial activities without the requisite license.
In a statement released by the Department of Economic Development in Ras Al Khaimah, Faisal Alioune, Director of the Commercial Control and Protection Department, asserted that the Department would take all necessary measures against those who violate the rights of consumers and cause them harm.
Alioune further stated that the monitoring team would continue its monitoring campaigns throughout the year with the objective of protecting consumers' rights and safety. He also appealed to consumers to report any violations they notice through the official communication channels of RAK DED.
