An Arab driver caused the death of an Asian scooter rider after running over him.
The Court of First Instance sentenced him to one month in jail and obligated him to pay blood money of Dhs200,000 to the heirs of the deceased.
The verdict was upheld by the Court of Appeal.
The case dated back to November last year when Dubai Police’s operations room received a report on a run-over accident on Al Wasl Street in Jumeirah.
According to a policeman, a patrol from Bur Dubai Police Station rushed to the scene of the accident, where it found the victim lying on the ground, covered in blood as a result of a severe injury in the head.
The policeman stated in the interrogations that the ambulance team confirmed that the victim had died as a result of the accident, adding that the inferences gathered from the scene of the accident showed that the victim was riding a scooter in a residential area and was run over by a vehicle that fled the scene immediately.
A team of detectives managed to identify and arrest the defendant, the policeman said. On interrogation, the defendant admitted that he was with his friend after midnight when they left a hotel in the area, adding that the victim suddenly appeared in front of him from the right and heading to the left and consequently he hit him.
The defendant stated that as he thought the collision was minor, he did not stop at the scene of the accident.
He also admitted that he had consumed some alcoholic beverages while he was at the hotel but was sober at the time of the accident.
