Alex Fernandes makes a worthy case for immigrants — they be given representation in the electoral process (“After Brexit exposed the flaws in electoral system, immigrants should be given the vote to make politics fair,” April 6, Gulf Today).
Immigrants pay taxes and government fees just like residents and also face the same difficulties as residents do and yet they have no say. I agree with him that immigrants are one of the few sections of society that can be demonised without the political establishment taking a direct hit at the ballot box. It’s time for a holistic electoral exercise.
