It has been an interesting year at the cinema. In the last week of 2019 we are taking a look back at the ups and downs at the box office with a list of the best and worst movies that have come out.
The beautiful Lupita Nyong’o starred in not only one but two roles when she played a doppelganger in the thriller Us. Directed and written by Jordan Peele and also starring Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss and other big names, the movie grossed $255.1 million worldwide against a budget of $20 million. The film had good reviews from critics and has been nominated for various awards making it a firm favourite on our best list.
Another one on our list of best movies is Marriage Story by director Noah Baumbach. The comedy-drama starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August after which it had a limited theatre release followed by digital streaming this month. It has received six nominations from the Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture – Drama. It will be interesting to see how this one does at the Oscars.
A documentary on our top ten list is One Child Nation which sees a Chinese-born filmmaker return to her home country to assess the different type of problems caused by China’s one-child policy. It premiered at Sundance back in January where it was awarded the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Documentary Award.
On our worst list we have Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix. We imagine most of you will agree that this is where that movie belongs. We also have Cold Pursuit starring Liam Neeson as well as The Lion King (I cannot believe I sat through that).
We wish you and your families a Happy New Year.
