There’s something oddly interesting about watching onscreen sibling rivalries unfold in a movie. This week we are taking a look at some of the best and most memorable fictional sibling spats which are talked about long after the films are released.
In the recently released Little Women, a movie adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel, we see the relationship between four sisters play out as they navigate their way into adulthood. Florence Pugh plays Amy who burns her sister Jo’s, played by Saoirse Ronan, manuscript in a fit of rage. The Greta Gerwig directed movie centres around rivalry and love between the sisters. The film was nominated for six Oscars including Best Actress for Ronan and Best Supporting Actress for Pugh.
In The Other Boleyn Girl sisters Anne and Mary Boleyn, played by Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, both compete for the attention of King Henry VIII. The 2008 film is also adapted from a 2001 novel of the same name by author Philippa Gregory and is directed by Justin Chadwick. The movie received mixed reviews from critics but no one can deny the drama between the two sisters made for excellent viewing.
In Brothers, which was released back in 2009, Tobey Maguire plays an army Captain who returns home from Afghanistan after being presumed dead. Upon his return he grows suspicious of his wife’s relationship with his ex-con brother played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Maguire was nominated for a Golden Globe award for his performance.
