While life is chaotic around us due to the coronavirus at the moment, we need to take care of our mental health. This week we are looking at ways to keep your anxiety in check while remaining safe and taking all the necessary steps to avoid catching COVID-19.
The first thing you need to realise is that your mind can play tricks on you and you do not have to believe everything you are thinking. It is very easy to get swept up in all the panic and hysteria surrounding the virus. Worrying about something won’t guarantee a better outcome. Try to get a hold of your thoughts before they get a hold of you. Keeping a written record of your worries is a good way to work through them and let them go.
Another way to keep your anxiety in check is to avoid watching all the live news that we are being bombarded with 24/7. Turn off social media notifications and limit your exposure to new information. We are not saying to bury your head in the sand and ignore what’s happening, but as long as you know the practical steps you need to be taking then there is no need to watch the news all day and night.
And what are those practical steps? We should all know them by now. Wash your hands thoroughly and often. Good old-fashioned soap and water does the best job and be sure to wash for 30 seconds. Gel sanitisers are the second option. Refrain from touching your face as the virus gets into your system via your nose, eyes and mouth.
