The pandemic has engulfed the world in sorrow and pain, forced closure of almost all outdoor events and locked millions of people indoors. But shortly the gloom will come to an end and humanity will come alive once again. So also will be the case with the rescheduled Expo 2020 (“New dates for Dubai Expo 2020 announced,” May 4, Gulf Today).
I feel sad that the mega event had to be postponed, but I am sure it will be as grand if not better than the one we all had expected. It is unfortunate though because the hosts had prepared the ground for an incomparable event. It has been a couple of years now since Dubai was selected for the prestigious show. And as expected Dubai lived up to its billing, fast-tracking the logistic and infrastructure requirements. Cruelly, almost at the eleventh hour, the pandemic stole the moment from them.
Among the many positives is that though the global mega event will now run from Oct.1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, the expo retains its name. As the report states, I am confident that Dubai will host an exceptional event come next October.
Though the delay is frustrating, I envisage the event breaking new ground, more because COVID-19 has reshaped our lives. Apart from it serving as an ideal podium for nations to share their collective visions of the future, the event may throw up new formats and ideas.
