Mirth, it wasn’t full, but there. Because we were meeting after a very long time. The hour was quite cold and deeply slothful, but the sun, though faint, took good care of the bite. We chose to walk through the woods, near his idyllic home, and talk because we desperately needed some seclusion.
The only disturbance that we had to grapple with was silence. The occasional rustling of leaves and, of course, shared and discussable memories were unavoidable interventions.
My friend was visibly downcast because he had lost his father. The deceased became a victim of two things and my friend was very upset about that. First, betrayals by his family members. Secondly, ailment. He got busy picking up the pieces after the incalculable loss, therefore, he hadn’t met me for such a long time.
Also, he stayed far away from me. It is another issue that distance doesn’t really matter when you are willing to cover it.
Well, our meeting. It just focused on his business. He owns a chain of bookstores, which at one point was doing very well and he had a dream life. He has everything that a modern man needs and enjoys.
But instead of being contented with his progress he, like most successful entrepreneurs, thought of being enterprising and decided to expand his trade. He didn’t accept it was actually avarice what he thought was enterprise.
Anyway, he moved ahead with his plan to develop his business and in the process invested millions of rupees. But things played out very differently and his new venture nearly collapsed.
It has turned out to be a stillborn exercise. He will probably exhaust his mortal calendar streamlining his finances.
The moral of the story: be happy with what you have.
The decision to expand his business was inspired by the huge success of his stores, which he attributed to his business acumen and refused to believe that some times it is just luck.
The wind then was blowing in his favour, which he mistook for skilful oarsmanship, I couldn’t convince him of that during our long and engaging conversation. Many fantastic human achievements have God’s extraordinary blessing like Maradona’s goal against England in the World Cup, I simply couldn’t convince him.
Despite his massive failure my friend refuses to accept that you can’t tailor life, life tailors you. COVID-19 is proving that at every step.
