There’s this strange phenomenon where, in the world of music, sometimes a good album does badly and a bad album doesn’t do well at all when it is released. This week we are looking at how there has been a comeback of some music from the 90s and noughties.
Let us look at the legend that is Mariah Carey. One of the best female singers the world has seen had an unfortunate release in the timing of her album “Glitter” when it coincided with the dreadful events of 9/11. Basically, the record didn’t even stand a chance, no matter how good the material on it was. Flash forward to 2020 and a Twitter campaign by die-hard fans and the album in back on the streaming charts.
Mariah’s “Glitter” hasn’t been the only album in this boat. Madonna’s “Bedtime Stories,” which was originally released in 1994, has been in the news and the charts again satisfying pop fans who thought the album had not received proper recognition. The same goes for Britney Spears and her album “Glory” released in 2016.
Pop is not the easiest genre to take seriously by the serious people in the music industry. First of all, pop singers are mostly female which says it all really. There are so many underrated female singers who deserve a better chance. Take Samantha Mumba as an example. She has been described as a “disrespected genius.” However, things are definitely starting to change.
