The spate in rape and murder of women in India is chilling. That it happens with such impunity indicates a complete breakdown of law and order (“Indian low-caste woman dies after gang-rape, second in a week,” Oct 1, Gulf Today).
The alleged perpetrators of such crimes are generally arrested, but in most cases that follows only after a hue and cry is raised or after the victim dies of her injuries. The law is meant to deter criminals and rapists from committing the crime. For it to be effective there is a need for conscientious police workforce. Sadly India falls short in that respect.
