This blame game by the United Nations isn’t taking us anywhere. We all know that humans are responsible for the current state of affairs on planet earth — be they political, or in regards to the health of the planet (“Humans to blame for out of control global warming, says UN report,” Aug. 9. Gulf Today).
That the United Nations is too late to realise that indeed humans are solely to blame, and not a chimpanzee or a rhino or a giraffe, for the current situation of the planet, it seems like the UN had nothing else to offer in terms of an explanation or a solution.
It’s a feeble statement, one that isn’t expected of a body like the UN, which anyway has begun losing credibility first with the disastrous handling of the pandemic by WHO and also failing to reprimand world leaders as they blatantly flouted environmental regulations.
As if by declaring a Code Red, the situation will improve. The situation will go on as it is, because the world leaders are more concerned about reviving the flailing economy.
Not only will the temperature reach a 1.5 increase, it will even surpass 1.5 degree Celsius. The prediction of 1.5 is mild, and it is made with a tunneled vision by standing on the platform of 2020-2021. Judging the behaviour of humans, it’s not far that the emissions will explode, the methane trapped under the Siberian ice will be released and Russia will be a tropical land with balmy weather and palm trees.
Not all the countries stand to lose from global warming in the short run. Each will have their moments of glory. Today’s tropics will be tomorrow’s deserts. In the long run, the planet will be hot. Very hot. Why are we sweating this stuff? Maybe that’s the definition of apocalypse.
