The UAE has recently implemented a ban on the single-use of plastic shopping bags which came into effect on June 1st, 2022 in Abu Dhabi. This is an important step as the country moves towards being a sustainable country.
The overuse of plastic bags contributes to deteriorating our environment. Plastic bags are mainly difficult to recycle as it breaks down into tiny harmful particles which may enter soil and oceans. Moreover, plastics can also enter into the food chain of various marine animals resulting in the decline of their population. Not only does it have an impact on the environment, it also adversely affects human lives. Hormone-related cancers, ADHD, and autism are some of the disorders that it may cause.
So a question may arise. How can we contribute as a UAE resident or a citizen? We can help by reducing the use of single-use plastic bags and switching to reusable paper bags. We can also replace plastic utensils with steel containers. Creating an awareness among people regarding the harmful effects of plastic bags is another factor that could contribute to saving our environment.
