The world of skincare can be a minefield with so many options to choose from and conflicting advice being given. This week we delve into the beauty world paying particular attention to the ingredients that have been made popular by social media and the celebrities who promote them.
It seems to have become a trend for a celebrity to come out with a skincare line lately. From Kim Kardashian to Hailey Bieber, everywhere we turn we are inundated with celebrities touting their own magical line of skincare products promising us flawless, dewy and glowing skin. But do we really understand the ingredients in these products? I don’t think that most of us do and it’s something that needs to change.
According to experts on skincare, celebrity products do not contain high enough amounts of an ingredient to make it potent enough to really do wonders for our skin. Also this idea of layering multiple products on top of each other, something we see on TikTok, is useless according to the experts who explain that after three products the skin just stops absorbing more product.
Hyaluronic acid is receiving a lot of buzz and has been doing so for a while. In the form of a gel or serum, it is meant to be highly moisturising and good for the skin. However, experts explain that hyaluronic acid is too big of a molecule to be effectively absorbed by our skin to that degree. Apparently while it does draw moisture and water to the skin, it just sits on the surface and doesn’t get absorbed.
So, from all this information we can learn one important lesson and that is to research your products and ingredients. Just because Kim Kardashian is claiming you’ll wake up with baby smooth skin or Hailey Bieber says we should go to bed looking like “a glazed doughnut,” it does not mean we should blindly believe them.
