The weepie genre, did you know that such a thing exists? The weepie genre can be found in the world of music, TV and film and basically means you’re going to watch or listen to something that is likely to induce tears. This week we delve into the world of melancholy movies and shows and discover the appeal behind them.
I have never been one to indulge in a sad movie or show. It just does not appeal to me. When I spend time watching a movie or a series, I want to be laughing not crying. It fascinates me how people can watch, and enjoy, sad things. Nevertheless, we all have different tastes and each to their own. The weepie genre is actually a really popular one it turns out.
Some psychologists have tried to explain that, when people turn up to the cinema to watch a sad movie and end up crying, they are releasing pent up emotions. The cinema creates a safe zone for them to let go and cry after being triggered by the sad movie. The same applies for watching something emotional at home.
Also, it is not just adult movies and shows that contain emotional scenes. Children’s movies, think Disney and “Bambi,” are also included. I still will not watch “Bambi,” it is too sad. Why would I want to watch an animation about a baby dear losing its mother, no thanks. But again, each to their own.
