After the pandemic, Hollywood and the movie industry had definitely taken a hit, like most industries in the world. This year was about building back after that catastrophe. This week we take a look at how Hollywood and the box office faired over the last 12 months.
While there were plenty of movies released this year, some critics say there were not enough. Statistically there were fewer wide-release movies in 2022. However, that did not stop people from flocking to the cinema and the love for the movie theatre continued to grow. Audiences enjoyed watching Tom Cruise doing his own stunts in “Top Gun: Maverick” and dinosaur fans delighted at “Jurassic World Dominion,” the latest release in that never-ending franchise. Disney did well with superhero titles this year releasing “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and the “Doctor Strange” sequel proving that Disney always stays relevant, even if it’s not with an animation.
It wasn’t a particularly successful year for comedy movies surprisingly. It was a good year for the horror genre though. Horror films “The Black Phone,” “Barbarian” and “Smile” all made for profitable releases. The main theme which dominated the box office was escapism entertainment based on established film franchises. That means that sequels, reboots and remakes are still the most popular with audiences.
