As we wait patiently for the Academy Awards ceremony to take place on March 12, we have been looking back at previous ceremonies going back a few years. This week we are talking about Oscar speeches from different winners over the years paying particular attention to the ones that were not that good.
It must be overwhelming for any actor to win such a huge award and then have to give a quick speech. Most actors handle it well though and are able to deliver a good, solid speech. However, that is not always the case. When Anne Hathaway won Best Supporting Actress back in 2012 for her role in “Les Miserables” her acceptance speech was not good. She began by muttering and her speech was described as “insincere and over-rehearsed.”
Matthew McConaughey bagged a Best Actor award back in 2014 for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club.” He proceeded to speak to his future self, calling himself a hero and saying that he needed to chase the hero. It was weird. He also said his signature catchphrase “alright, alright, alright,” which many people find a bit annoying.
Gwyneth Paltrow made a weepy speech when she collected her Best Actress award for her role in “Shakespeare in Love” back in 1998. She made a long, emotional speech where she listed off so many people that it left viewers questioning her sincerity. It makes you wonder if the actors are better preparing a speech and rehearsing it or winging it when they get up on the stage.
