The United Arab Emirates (UAE) stands out as a pioneer in the region, not only in the fields of art, science, technology, and entertainment, but also in its commitment to protecting the environment. The UAE’s remarkable efforts to mitigate climate change are setting new standards for others to follow. A recent decision by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to accelerate its net-zero emission target by 5 years deserves special recognition (“Adnoc aims to achieve net zero emission target by 2045,” Aug.1, Gulf Today website).
While numerous nations are grappling with the detrimental effects of global warming, such as extreme weather events, many are reluctant to adapt or alter their policies. In contrast, the UAE has taken proactive measures to address climate change and reduce its carbon footprint. This demonstrates the country’s dedication to sustainability and its willingness to lead by example.
By setting an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions ahead of schedule, ADNOC is positioning itself as an industry leader in the transition towards a low-carbon economy.
The UAE’s proactive stance on environmental preservation is praiseworthy. By taking significant steps to combat climate change, the country is not only safeguarding its own future but also inspiring others to follow suit. In a world where the consequences of global warming are becoming increasingly evident, the UAE’s dedication to environmental sustainability serves as a shining example for nations worldwide.
The most unfortunate thing is that the nations who are going to suffer the most may not be the same nations who are harming the environment very badly. In other words, many countries are going to be the victims of “disproportionate punishments” of nature. Developing nations say they’re owed for climate damage and they will not reduce carbon footprint until they get their ‘deserving portion’ of “climate finance” without knowing the fact that the tsunami of destruction is on its way. Legal and logical may not be concurrent and synonymous always.
