We all love a good plot twist or two when we are watching a movie or series. This week we are taking a look at some of the best plot twists where audiences are actually given clues about an ending early on in a film or show. This is known as foreshadowing.
In the Chris Nolan movie “Interstellar” starring Matthew McConoughey, we have a fine example of foreshadowing. From one of the very first lines of the film we are told something that turns out to be true at the end of the film.
We see this again in the Bond film “Skyfall” over the death of the character M played by Dame Judi Dench. In the movie’s opening credits, when Dench’s name appears, we are given a glimpse of a tombstone which is obviously a preview of what is to come. The character ends up dying in that film.
This tactic is a clever way to get audiences engaged and thinking about what is coming next. It can be done playfully or in a really satirical way that leaves viewers puzzled and confused, but completely absorbed in the script.
