Small problems

The recent news in the papers is that the Voyager 1 spacecraft is back in action after some mechanical problems. What amuses me is that it is now sending back messages from 24 billion kilometers away in 22.5 hours, less than a day so why does it take more than a week for a letter to go across a city?
Scientists can solve big problems but who can solve my small problems?
