The much-talked about Test series between host Pakistan and England started on Monday in Multan. Excitement was palpable, but Pakistani fans were little apprehensive about their team's performance after a poor show against touring Bangladesh recently. Despite the fact that cricket is a game of glorious uncertainty, critics and fans were not sure about Pakistan’s performance. But on Monday, contrary to expectation, Pakistani captain Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique surprised everyone with their centuries. Shan looked in great touch and was very confident, while Shafique too followed his captain. Both of them gave Pakistan a solid start.
Shan made 151, while Shafique made 102, later on day 2, Salman Agha made 104, while Saud Shakeel 82. But old guards Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan could not do much on a very good batting track. Pakistan made 556 in the first innings and I am sure it is a good total to defend. I am extremely happy to see the way Pakistani batters batted in the first innings. I am also relieved to see Shan got his confidence back. He was under immense pressure. I must appreciate head coach Jason Gillespie for seeing potential in Shan, and allowed him to lead his team, despite poor performance in the past. I am sure Pakistan will bounce back. They have tremendous potential to be the best.
