What makes a movie special? Is it the plot? Is it the actors? While the plot matters, the actors cast in the film can make it or break it. This week we are taking a look at some well-known films where the casting just wasn’t right.
Scarlett Johansson has not done much wrong in her career, however when it comes to the movie “Ghost in the Shell,” we have a different story. The action science fiction movie came out in 2017 and the decision to cast Johansson as its cyborg heroine did not go down well. Based on an anime series, the character that Johansson plays is originally Asian. This caused an uproar and the director was accused of “whitewashing” by not choosing an Asian actress over Johansson.
The historical drama film “Alexander,” based on Alexander the Great, came out back in 2004 to good reviews. Audiences and critics enjoyed the film but there was something rather strange about the casting of Angelina Jolie in it. Alexander was played by Colin Farrell and Jolie was cast as his mother. There is only a year age difference between the pair, Jolie was 29 at the time while Farrell was 28. This screams ageism and I am sure there were plenty other actresses of an appropriate age who could have played the role of the mother instead of Jolie.
In other news this week, turn to our Fitness pages to learn about how to make the most out of walking and exercising. Apparently it is not the number of steps we should be concered with but rather how many steps we take per minute.
