The defining moment of Friday’s action at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship 2019 came as the home nation’s Faisal Al Ketbi stood proudly atop the podium, the shiny gold medal glistening around his neck.
As everyone expected the Mubadala Arena to fill out with the notes of the UAE national anthem, they were in for a surprise.
The entire arena sang the National Anthem in unison, from first note to last and at times drowning out the music with their passionate vocals, with all eyes directed adoringly towards Ketbi, the country’s sole Gold medalist on Friday in the adult’s division at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship 2019.
Ketbi’s Gold, earned in the 94 kg category was his fourth in five attempts at the World Championship, and came on a day when the UAE Jiu-Jitsu National Team put up a string of brave performance but all apart from Ketbi fell short of medals.
“Faisal is the perfect guide for the upcoming generation of Jiu-Jitsu athletes in the UAE. He is one of the most important pillars in the UAE men’s Jiu-Jitsu National Team and an athlete who has been exemplary in every way. Faisal’s performance today was an excellent example for our upcoming Jiu-Jitsu athletes on how to conduct themselves in a high-pressure tournament like the World Championship,” says Mubarak Al Menhali, Technical Director of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation.
Pitted in the final against Germany’s Julian Stonjek, who had won his quarterfinal and semifinal by submission within a minute each, Ketbi put out a tactically astute display shutting down the German’s aggressive maneuvers before picking up two key points with a perfectly executed leg-sweep, ultimately clinching the gold with a 2-0 victory.
“Today’s win was quite special. It wasn’t the easiest tournament for me. I had a tough draw and knew that I had to grind out tough wins. But, because of all the support that I receive from everyone, especially the UAEJJF, their constant cooperation and their efforts to prepare us so well, I managed to execute my plans,” says Ketbi.
The 32-year-old says that though he was the sole UAE athlete to finish with a medal on Friday, he was impressed with the performance put up by his young teammates.
“I know that everyone who fought today gave it their all. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out on the mat and my teammates must understand that. Though I was focused on my own performances, I saw that Mohammed Al Kubaisi, Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Hamdan Al Balooshi, and all the others really tried very hard to make the country proud. I am sure looking at their performance here and the constant improvements that UAEJJF brings to our training programme, success is not far,” he says.
Jiu-Jitsu’s popularity in the UAE has been steadily growing and the calibre of its young athletes has continued to grow as evidenced by the emphatic performances the UAE Jiu-Jitsu National team put up in the under-18 and under-21 categories.
At the end of the second day of the World Championship, thanks to the performance of their juniors, the UAE were at the summit of the medal chart with 39 medals including 12 golds to their name — all won in the under-18 and under-21 categories.
Then on Tuesday, 23-year-old Hamad Eissa Al Balooshi won gold medal for the UAE National Jiu-Jitsu, getting the better of his Kazakh opponent Ildar Zainalov in the final of the56 kg category of the Para Jiu-Jitsu competition.
The Jiu-Jitsu World Championship 2019 has been organised by the Ju-Jitsu International Federation and is hosted by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) at Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Arena and will run until Nov.24.
