NASCAR Ryan Newman walks home 2 days after appalling Daytona crash

NASCAR veteran Ryan Newman emerges invincible from Monday’s disastrous crash on the Daytona 500 superspeedway that had totaled the driver’s No. 6 Ford Mustang beyond repair.

The community waited with bated breath after the news broke and multiple videos of the frightening accident during the last lap surfaced, presenting fans and spectators alike with a comprehensive assessment of the horrific impact Newman had endured.

On February 17, the leading No. 6 Ford was captured swerving sharply to the right nudged by Ryan Blaney in 12, sending the racecar headfirst toward the track edge. Spinning on its wheels in a cloud of smoke, the car flipped over from the momentum. While the battered vehicle tossed in the air catching sparks, Corey Lajoie’s 32 slammed into Newman’s Ford delivering the final destructive blow that hurled it through the track on its roof, engulfed in flames.

The 42-year-old driver was rushed to Halifax Medical Centre where his condition was announced as critical but not life-threatening.

The stock car organisation kept fans updated through Twitter, and to the community’s great relief, Newman was spotted standing and smiling in a hospital gown with his daughters after NASCAR supporters expressed concern over textual updates: “The good news is he is awake and able to speak. It is somewhat disconcerting however that his injuries have yet to be disclosed. Hoping for the best,” tweeted one.

On Wednesday, just 42 hours following the collision, Roush Fenway rushed to disclose Newman's release from the hospital and commended the driver’s “jovial nature” for contributing to his speedy recovery.

Ross Chastain is to bear the torch instead in the No. 6 Ford for the upcoming Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) in light of Newman’s recuperating hiatus.

Fenway says Newman’s return to the tracks is still in talks, for there is “no timetable yet.”
