T20 World Cup to be played in UAE from Oct.17 to Nov.14

The UAE sports body has confirmed that the T20 World Cup would take place in the Emirates from Oct.17 to Nov.14.

A source with the knowledge of the event said some matches maybe played in Oman.  

The authorities also confirmed that the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) matches that were called off due to spike in COVID-19 cases would also be played in the UAE.   

The IPL is likely to end on Oct.15.

The initial matches would be played with eight teams. They are Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Ireland.

These teams will play to earn 4 spots in the Super 12s.

The UAE and Oman will have the Round 1 elimination matches at a bubble venue.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) made gave no further details but said a decision would be announced soon.

The authorities would set the dates and venues and an announcement would be likely made after June 28.

The preparedness and selection of UAE as host shows the firm commitment by UAE to carry out the event safely in the wake of pandemic.

In May, the IPL matches were suspended after COVID cases were reported in players of different teams.

The 31 remaining IPL matches will be completed between Sept.19 and Oct.15 under the strict guidelines of the UAE sports body.

The money-spinning T20 World Cup is a 16-nation event. The last of the Super 12s would likely begin from Oct.24.
