Austria’s rider Patrick Konrad emerged triumphant on the Tour de France’s stage 16 on Tuesday after pulling away from a group of rivals with 36 kilometres to go.
The 29-year-old Konrad crossed the line 42 seconds ahead of five chasers on day two of racing in the Pyrenees.
Race leader Tadej Pogacar of Team Emirates stay on course for his second victory by retaining his overall lead.
The defending champion Pogacar reached the finishing line 13 minutes and 49 seconds after the Austrian to uphold his lead of approximately five minutes in general classification.
Konrad came close twice earlier during the Tour, a reason that inspired him to attack again.
British rider Mark Cavendish of Deceuninck–Quick-Step, retained his green jersey and still have two chances to overhaul Eddy Merckx's all time 46-year-old record after his four stage victories so far in the Tour.
After the second and final rest day on Monday, Team Emirates’ sprinter leading the top five competitors by more than five minutes and looked as comfortable as ever.
