Noobi pleased with his performance as UAE end Tokyo Games campaign

Hassan Al Noobi produced an impressive performance in the preliminary heats of the 100 metres competition as UAE’s 2020 Tokyo Games campaign ended on Saturday. Noobi, who was the last participant of the UAE’s five-member squad, clocked 10.59 seconds to finish third in the first preliminary heat. Barakat Al Harthi (10.27) of Oman came first while Emanuel Archibald (10.30) of Guyana took second spot.

After securing a spot for the second round, the wildcard entry ended eight in the next with a time of 10.64. Despite bowing out of the Games, Noobi was delighted with his efforts. “Participating in the Olympics is the dream of every athlete and I am happy with my performance and second round finish.

“What I achieved in the Games in Tokyo will motivate me to improve my performance. I want to prepare harder for the future events and bring medals for the country.

“I extend my thanks and appreciation to the National Olympic Committee, Athletics Federation, Sharjah Sports Council and all those who supported me in my path to reach at this level,” he added.

Before Noobi four athletes of the UAE’s Olympic squad tried their best for a podium finish but were unsuccessful.

Ace shooter Saif Bin Futtais kicked off the UAE’s campaign in skeet shooting, and bowed out of the competition after finishing 24th.

Judokas Ivan Remarenco lost to Shady El Nahas while Victor Scvortov was defeated by Tommy Macias.

Promising swimmer Yousuf Al Matrooshi, who was also the UAE flag-bearer at the opening ceremony, finished third in the 100m freestyle heats.
